Review – Black Mountain Volume Pedal: A Compact, Efficient Game Changer

I was casually scrolling through Facebook when an ad for the Black Mountain Volume Pedal popped up. I thought, “Great idea —this could be exactly what I need,” so I decided to give it a try.

I’m no stranger to volume pedals. Back in my early looping days, I used the original Boomerang Phrase Sampler, which had a “volume wheel”—and that’s essentially the concept behind the Black Mountain. While it’s not your typical rocker-style pedal, you’ll quickly get the hang of using it with your foot. Plus, its compact size (about the same as a standard Boss pedal) makes it incredibly convenient—small enough to fit in your gig bag without taking up valuable pedalboard real estate.

The pedal is completely passive, with a simple setup: input, output, and a tuner out. On the front, you’ve got a switch that lets you choose between two volume tapers. The linear taper provides a smooth, consistent increase from 0 to 10, while the audio taper allows for more gradual volume changes at lower settings, with a quicker ramp-up at higher levels. For me, the linear taper is perfect for most situations, though I plan to experiment with the audio taper for certain effects.

How does it perform? Flawlessly. Whether your pedalboard is packed to the brim or you just want a standalone volume pedal, the Black Mountain delivers. Its portability and simplicity make it an absolute win—just pop it in your gig bag, and you’re good to go.

In short, this pedal is a solid, no-fuss solution for anyone looking to save space, streamline their setup, or just get a high-quality volume control that packs a punch.

Well done, Black Mountain!
