Sequence Variations
In previous lessons, we worked on sequencing both scales and arpeggios into groups of four. Instead of strictly sequencing the scales into four or five note patterns, we can also add variations to the sequence itself.
The first exercise alternates between a five and seven note grouping of notes from the scale. Play the first five notes of the F Ionian mode and switch to a grouping of seven notes starting from the second degree of the scale (g). Continue with five notes starting from the fifth degree (c) and another seven notes starting from the 6th degree of the scale (d). Continue the sequence going down the scale.

The next exercise alternates between a four and five note sequence. Play the first four notes of the scale starting with an ‘f” and then switch to a sequence of five notes starting from the second degree of the scale (g). Continue the sequence alternating between four and five note groupings with each degree of the scale and continue the sequence going back down the scale.
This last exercise alternates between a grouping of four, five and seven note sequences. Start with a grouping of four notes from the root, then five notes from the second degree of the scale (g) and seven notes from the third degree of the scale (a). Continue the pattern to the top and then follow the sequence back down again.
You can take these sequence variations through all the modes of the major, melodic, and harmonic minor– and make up your own variations as well! Good luck!
