New Album: Don Bolo, UMMA
DON BOLO releases his fourth studio album titled UMMA, featuring Bassist Emilio Montenegro.
Don Bolo is an experimental and instrumental Ecuadorian group with 10 years of constant creativity and struggle. Over this time, the band has released three albums and now unveils its fourth studio album titled UMMA, which means Prophet.
Today, Don Bolo stands as one of the most authentic and avant-garde sounds in the country. Their eccentric approach to musical experimentation makes their discography one of the most original catalogs in Ecuador and the region. They’ve even drawn attention from international media and blogs in the United States, France, Peru, Colombia, Uruguay, Germany, England, among others.
UMMA, far from being just an instrumental and conceptual album, is an auditory odyssey transporting the listener to the edges of a desert from another era—or perhaps another dimension—where the tragic story of a Messiah unfolds, weighed down by the devastating burden of his destiny. This album delves into unsettling themes such as the psychology of fanaticism, the darkest corners of charismatic leadership, and the hypnotic power of faith. UMMA boldly invites listeners to venture into a profoundly strange, enigmatic, and revealing musical experience—a melodic chaos oscillating between introspective meditation and the relentless storm of contradictions and opposing forces. In the end, it emerges as a somber warning chant, a skeptical cry in the face of an increasingly surreal world.
Inspired by the vast universe of the science fiction saga DUNE by the legendary Frank Herbert, Don Bolo channels the philosophical concepts and worldview of this literary masterpiece into every corner of UMMA, blending seamlessly with their sonic identity.
For this innovative chapter, Don Bolo dives into the mysterious echoes of Persia and the Middle East, amalgamating them with their fierce Criminal Punk Jazz and hints of the Andes and electronics, thanks to the collaboration with Ibarra’s virtuoso Esteban Farinango. This album marks a turning point in their trajectory, a leap towards musical maturity, incorporating elements never before explored such as piano, organs, and synthesizers performed by Víctor Andrade (Niñosaurios), as well as futuristic and organic soundscapes courtesy of musicians like Tania Cortés, Rubén Riera, and Farinango himself.
UMMA’s shamanic and introspective essence comes to life through the interpretations of researcher Bryan Izurieta, who imbues the album with Andean wind and percussion instruments. This collaboration, together with the contributions of Félix Atahualpa and ZAMBAJE, evokes esoteric atmospheres and sound rituals that transcend the mundane. UMMA is not just an album; it is a portal to the unknown, a musical experience that challenges conventional understanding.

UMMA is also a visual experience. The album’s artwork was created by Don Bolo’s bassist, composer, and producer Emilio Montenegro, along with Verónica Olivo. The pieces were created through improvisation and the spontaneous act of playing with watercolor paper, water, and plant-based dyes. Each track title is written in a special typography designed by the visual artist Azpeger.
The album is accompanied by three singles—Jihad, Abominación, and Hajra—available on all streaming platforms, as well as an animated music video created by musician and illustrator Sebastián Valbuena (Pánico).

The album is exclusively available on Bandcamp, as an alternative to the harmful model of streaming platforms and as a statement against the “music industry.” For now, Don Bolo is planning the release concerts and encourages all those interested to follow the band on their social networks: Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Bandcamp.
