With her effect-laden bass propelling an entrancing and explorative groove, Pops Magellan returns with the second video of her series filmed at EastWest Studios in Los Angeles with today’s drop of “Deep Thoughts” featuring Noa Kahn. This release marks the second in a series of three performances that follows the initial debut of “Misunderstood” (watch it here).

“‘Deep Thoughts’ was the first track we recorded that day,” says Magellan. “The bass intro hit, and I felt how massive that room was. It definitely makes you play differently. I usually go for tight, dry mixes, so letting it breathe, especially with electronic elements was challenging in a great way.”

The song features frequent collaborator drummer Noa Kahn, who Magellan played alongside in touring with Adam Lambert. The two link up on “Deep Thoughts” delivering a tight pocket groove that mesmerizes the listener while locking in on every twist and turn of the song. “Noa is such a precise and solid drummer. She played on the record too and doing it live with her was very special.”

Joining the rhythm section is Artur Menezes on guitar and Curtis Crump on keys, who both provide the rich melodic and harmonic overtones to the masterful work of the rhythm section. The quartet showcases the multitude of styles that Brazilian-born Magellan weaves into her compositions, which can be hard to categorize, but easy to enjoy.

As Magellan explains, “This song has a maracatu vibe, kind of melancholic but building into something epic and powerful by the end. Artur’s also Brazilian, so he totally gets the feel, and we went deep with it.”

The third and final release of Magellan’s EastWest video sessions will be “Drive Complaining” (Featuring Sput and Artur Menezes), which will be premiered later this month.
