BASS LINES: Chord Tone Bass Line
Hello bass players and fans of bass playing! This month, we’re going to cover “Chord Tone Bass Line.”
One of the most important things to understand is how bass lines relate to the chords. Every chord has certain “key notes”, known as chord tones, that really define its sound. As a bassist, you can focus on hitting these key notes to solidify the harmony and create a strong foundation for the music.
For example, if you’re playing the C major chord (C – E – G), these are your chord tones.
• C (root)
• E (major third)
• G (perfect fifth)
When you’re playing over a chord progression like C – F – G – C, think about emphasizing the root, third, and fifth of each chord in your bass line. This gives your bass lines a strong sense of harmonic movement.
Let’s break this down using the C – F – G – C progression, with a focus on the chord tones:
C | F | G | C
——————————————
| C – E – G | F – A – C | G – B – D |
C – E – G |
You’ll notice we’re sticking to the root, third, and fifth of each chord, but you can play them in any order or rhythm!
