Jazz basses have always had a special place in the bass world: sleek design, articulate tone, and the kind of versatility that made them staples across nearly every genre. But what happens when you take that foundation and supercharge it with a powerful preamp, a fifth string, and modern playability, all while keeping the price player-friendly? That’s exactly what Sire set out to do with the Marcus Miller V6, and they may have just nailed it.
First Impressions
The V6 makes a strong entrance before you even plug it in. At just about 3.7 kg, it’s shockingly lightweight for a 5-string, yet still feels sturdy and solid in hand. The neck is immediately inviting: rolled fretboard edges, clean fretwork, and a satin finish that practically begs you to move up and down the board. Right out of the box, it feels broken-in, like a bass that’s been with you through a few tours already.
There’s a small trade-off here, though. That light body means a touch of neck-dive on the 5-string version. With a strap, it’s hardly noticeable, but players used to more traditional, heavier Jazz-style basses will pick up on it. Still, comfort is the defining trait here; this is a bass you can gig with for hours without fatigue.
Sound and Flexibility
The true test of any 5-string is the low B, and the V6 passes with flying colors. It’s tight, articulate, and surprisingly well-balanced with the rest of the strings. Now and then it feels a touch hotter, but it never crosses into problem territory. It’s more than gig-worthy.
But the real spotlight here is the Heritage-3 preamp paired with the Marcus Super-J Revolution pickups. In active mode, the V6 is a powerhouse: punchy lows, articulate mids, and shimmering highs that give you a modern, polished Jazz voice. The 3-band EQ is extremely responsive; even small tweaks shift the character of the bass in noticeable, musical ways.
In passive mode, the V6 still holds its own, though it leans a little more sterile compared to its active personality or the warmth of its sibling, the P6. Usable? Absolutely. Inspiring? Maybe less so. But flip back to active and the V6 comes alive with character and authority.
Design and Details
The V6 is built with Sire’s signature philosophy: give working bassists boutique features without boutique prices. The body combines mahogany with a sandblasted ash top for a refined, almost custom-shop aesthetic. The C-shaped maple neck is smooth and fast, while vintage-inspired hardware keeps everything stable and reliable.
Out of the box, you get DR roundwounds, bright, clear, and long-lasting, plus Sire’s official gig bag. And this isn’t your average “throwaway” bag: it’s padded, rugged, and clearly designed with the traveling bassist in mind.
On the Bandstand
I ran the V6 through a couple of rehearsals and a live set, and it proved to be exactly what you want from a modern Jazz-style bass: adaptable, comfortable, and reliable. In funk and fusion contexts, active mode delivered the kind of articulation and clarity that let me sit perfectly in the mix without stepping on anyone’s toes. For rock and pop, it provided enough punch and presence to anchor the band with authority. And yes… I’d take it through a three-hour gig without a second thought.
Final Thoughts
The Sire Marcus Miller V6 isn’t just another active Jazz-style bass. It’s a smart reinvention, a lightweight, modern workhorse that still pays respect to the classic Jazz identity. Its active mode shines, its low B string impresses, and its playability makes it a joy to pick up every time.
For players who need the flexibility of a preamp, the comfort of a lightweight body, and the reassurance of a dependable 5-string, the V6 is a serious contender. Sire has once again proven that high-end feel and features don’t have to come with a high-end price tag.
