New Album: Hearty Breakfast, Sensible Dinner
“Hearty Breakfast, Sensible Dinner” by Massachusetts bassist Mike Goodspeed oscillates between progressive rock, folk and cinematic music.
“Hearty Breakfast, Sensible Dinner” is out on New Year’s Day, 2026. It is his first album release since 2024’s “Family Truckster.”
Mike Goodspeed continued to release singles throughout 2025. His music as a whole continues to evade easy classification, but each track manages to find its own lane. Lead off track “Coming To Getcha” features Zappa-inspired writing and the stick work of fellow Massachusetts resident Jesse Stiglich. The folksy “Hard To Fathom” and “Uncertainty” feature gentle, aching double bass melodies. “Abandoned” and “Timeline Of The Far Future” explore the mysterious, cinematic realm and make use of the full range of the 5-string double bass. “Blue Icicles” veers into ambient territory and contains a hypnotic open harmonic motif. “Night Runner” features a furious tapped ostinato, courtesy of Goodspeed’s G&L ASAT 4-string. Peter Gabriel’s cover of “I Don’t Remember” is a fun departure, with Goodspeed attacking his fretless Carvin to imitate Tony Levin’s classic Chapman Stick part. New track “Duly Noted” is a relatively straight-ahead instrumental rock tune featuring Brazilian percussionist Alessandro Moleta, and it closes the album on a more upbeat tone.
“Hearty Breakfast, Sensible Dinner” gives the listener plenty to ponder while also retaining a sense of fun and adventure. Mike Goodspeed’s other releases are available on all major platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music, and are in rotation on Amazing Radio.
