A Focused, Modern Take on Classic B-15 Tone
Vintage bass tones are firmly back in rotation, and much of that renewed interest centers on the feel and authority of the Ampeg B-15. The Sushi Box FX Grand Slampegg approaches that legacy with a clear, modern mindset: use real tube hardware, keep the signal path honest, and give players exactly what they need, no more, no less.
After receiving the pedal directly from Sushi Box FX founder Nathan Slade, I used the Grand Slampegg both in controlled testing and on live gigs. What stood out immediately wasn’t flexibility, but confidence. This pedal knows what it is.
What the Grand Slampegg Is
At the heart of the Grand Slampegg is a 6SL7 tube, a key part of early Ampeg designs and a big reason this pedal feels different from more common 12AX7-based preamps. The tube runs at proper high voltage, delivering real tube compression, headroom, and touch sensitivity rather than tube “color” as an effect.
The circuit is built around a Baxandall EQ, which offers broad, musical tone shaping instead of aggressive frequency carving. The result is a preamp that reacts more like an amplifier front end than a typical pedal.
Controls and I/O
The layout is clean and functional, with clearly defined roles:
- Volume – Overall output level for the 1/4″ path
- Treble / Bass – Baxandall EQ controls, wide and musical by design
- HPF switch – Tightens the low end by filtering sub frequencies, especially useful on boomy stages or with modern cabinets
- 1/4″ Pre/Dry switch – Selects whether the 1/4″ output carries the processed signal or a buffered dry signal
On the output side, the pedal offers:
- XLR DI Out with its own independent volume control
- Buffered 1/4″ Out with independent volume control
This makes it easy to send different levels to front of house and stage amplification without compromise; a practical feature that matters in real-world use.
Notably, there is no footswitch. The Grand Slampegg is designed to stay on, acting as the tonal foundation of your rig rather than a stomp-in effect.
Sound and Feel
Sonically, the Grand Slampegg delivers exactly what its design suggests. Low end is full but controlled, mids are smooth and supportive, and highs are present without ever feeling sharp. The HPF switch adds extra control when needed, tightening things up without thinning the sound.
The 6SL7 tube contributes a softer, rounder response than many modern tube pedals. Digging in adds thickness and harmonic richness rather than edge, and lighter playing remains even and consistent. Breakup, when it appears, is subtle and musical… more studio saturation than overdrive.
Live and Studio Use
In live settings, the Grand Slampegg works best as a set-and-forget preamp. Into a clean amp, it provides a vintage-leaning foundation that sits naturally in a band mix. Running the XLR DI straight to FOH delivers a finished, reliable bass sound with minimal EQ required.
In the studio, it excels as a DI preamp. The combination of the 6SL7 tube and Baxandall EQ produces a tone that already feels “mixed,” reducing the need for heavy processing later.

Bottom Line
The Sushi Box FX Grand Slampegg is a purpose-built tool for bassists who value feel, weight, and musical response over endless features. With its 6SL7 tube, Baxandall EQ, and well-thought-out I/O, it delivers a classic-inspired tone in a format that works on modern stages.
If you’re looking for a warm, authoritative, always-on preamp that behaves like a real amp front end, the Grand Slampegg stays focused and delivers.
