Exclusive: STUY Music Video Premiere
What It Feel Like is STUY’s first single off their highly-anticipated debut LP.
This song is as energetic as the city that birthed it. It’s hardcore, thrash, and noise – and pent up with rage. The lyrics, “Everyones always fucking talking” speaks to the impending threats that face our community and the inaction that follows.
From Corona, Queens to Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn ‘What It Feel Like’ is at the heart of the album’s theme: having nothing and being on the precipice of everything. The song exists on a spectrum of adrenaline and anxiety expressed through a barrage of sonic changes and scathing vocal deliveries.
Getting the Sound
Bassist, Bert shares… I used my Fender Aerodyne with D’Addario semi-flat strings. The amplifier I used was a 1973 Ampeg SVT with an 8 x 10 Ampeg cabinet. Initially, I was using an Ampex scrambler pedal but wanted to hone in on the tones of abrasiveness and reach a jarring sound. I borrowed an unbranded custom fuzz/distortion from Jeff Berner, at Studio G Brooklyn. It had a Don Mattingly baseball card on the front. The pedal was on the entire time. I achieved the quieter dynamics with different picking styles.

PR SamplePlaying bass with a pick is still a touchy subject in our community. I believe you should be able to use whatever you need to get your sound. Even though I mostly play with my fingers, I like to check out innovative new picks that might have something new to offer, sonically speaking.
Judith and Carlos from Rombo recently contacted me about a new material called CrystalBright that they have been researching for the last 12 months and offered to send some prototype picks. After trying them out, I put together this video with my findings.
