Mikel Combs

Mikel Combs is a versatile acoustic and electric bassist currently living and working in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex.  He received a BM and MM (fall 2009) in jazz studies from the University of North Texas.  He has performed extensively in New York, LA, throughout the Midwest, and, naturally, the D/FW metroplex.  Mikel has recorded, performed, and appeared with nationally known artists such as Rodney Holmes, Keith Carlock, Jimi Tunnell, Allan Holdsworth, Mario Cruz, Lynn Seaton, Wayne Delano, Dennis Durick (Dave Liebman), Chris Potter, Bruce Foreman, Steve Davis, Ari Hoenig, Chad Wackerman, and Ronald Shannon Jackson.  He has studied with Lynn Seaton, Jeff Andrews, Jeff Bradetich, Mike Pope, Drew Gress, and Jimmy Charlsen (Carl Filipiak, Dennis Chambers).  His strengths as a musician draw from his 20 year experience as a bassist, pedagogue, and academic.  His plans for the remainder of 2009 are: to finish his book, which concentrates of the expansion of the electric bass within the jazz tradition, and record his first album as a leader.  Mikel's plans for the next year are focused on two major decisions: 1) Enroll in the progressive Eastman College of Music's jazz studies program for a DMA in composition and performance, and 2) Moving to Helsinki, Finland.
