Jazz Improvisation with Andrea Fascetti – Bebop Part 5

HI MY “BASS” FRIENDS!

HOW ARE YOU? HOPE YOU HAD A GREAT SUMMERTIME! NOW AS SUMMER IS ALMOST OVER, WE CAN RESTART TO STUDY OUR EXERCISES… OK?

THIS FIFTH LESSON IS DEDICATED TO BEBOP. AS USUAL I’VE MADE FOR YOU A REPETITIVE SERIES OF EXERCISES BECAUSE THIS WILL FORCE YOU TO USE CONCEPTS THAT BECOME MORE AND MORE FAMILIAR WHILE YOU’RE STUDYING IT. REPETITION IS VERY IMPORTANT IN MUSIC PRACTICE SO YOUR BRAIN CAN LEARN THE NEW INFORMATIONS AND USE IT PROPERLY. MUSIC IS NOT WIZARDRY; OUR FAVORITE PLAYERS, FROM ALL GENRES, USE THIS TEACHNIQUE AS WELL.

OK, T’S TIME FOR THE USUAL HOMEWORK ASSIGMENT… SO LET’S GET TO “BEBOP” AND YOU’LL BE HAPPY 🙂

1) RETURN AGAIN TO DONNALEE (LAST LESSONS WE PLAY FIRST 16 BARS) AND PLAY FROM BAR 16 TO BAR 32. PLAY IT EXTREMELY SLOWLY AND SING THE NOTES ALONG WITH YOUR BASS… AS I SAID, IF YOU LOOK DUMB, YOU’RE PRACTICING THE EXERCISES VERY WELL 🙂 THEN TRANSPOSE IT TO OTHER KEYS, ESPECIALLY KEYS YOU RARELY USE.

2) TRY TO IMITATE THE BEBOP STYLE AND WRITE A 4-BAR SOLO USING THE NOTES YOU FOUND IN THIS TUNE.THEN PLAY IT AND SING IT ALONG WHILE YOU’RE PRACTICING.

3) ANALYZE THE TUNE’S NOTES (IS IT A 5TH OF THE CHORD, OR A THIRD, ETC.?) AND WRITE THE NOTE ANALYSIS ON A PAPER.

OK, I KNOW THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS TO PRACTICE, BUT I’M SURE YOU’LL DO IT!

GOOD LUCK AND HAVE A GOOD PRACTICE TIME.

CIAO

ANDREA
