Jazz Improvisation with Andrea Fascetti: Chromatic Approaches Part 2

Andrea-Fascetti-article-pictireHI MY “BASS FRIENDS”! HOW ARE YOU? HOPE YOU LIKED THIS NEW TECHNIQUE I’VE SHOWN YOU, THAT’ S CALLED CHROMATIC APPROACHES!

FIRST OF ALL, I WANT TO CLARIFY SOME INFORMATION I GAVE YOU IN MY PAST LESSONS. IF YOU TAKE A LOOK AT OLD EXERCISES, YOU FOUND MANY THINGS ABOUT BEBOP. THE EXERCISES I PROPOSE HERE ARE TO USE WITH THE INFORMATION I SUGGESTED TO YOU IN THE BEBOP EXERCISES SERIES.

I RECEIVED SEVERAL EMAILS ABOUT THE WORD “JAZZ”. REMEMBER THAT THIS IS A COURSE ABOUT IMPROVISATION, ALWAYS I TALK ABOUT JAZZ IMPROVISATION BECAUSE, IN JAZZ MUSIC YOU FIND ALL THE TECNIQUES THAT ALL GREAT BASS IMPROVISERS ARE USING. OBVIOUSLY, AFTER YOU HAVE LEARNED ALL OF THIS STUFF, YOU CAN PLAY THE KIND OF MUSIC YOU PREFER.

THIS LESSON I PROPOSE TO YOU IS THE SECOND EXERCISE OF A LONG SERIES DEDICATED TO BEBOP STYLE. I STRONGLY URGE YOU TO STUDY AND PRACTICE ALL MY PAST LESSONS ABOUT THIS ARGUMENT, TO HAVE A COMPLETE “VIEW” OF MY WORK.

AND NOW, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN HERE IS THE USUAL HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT…

EXERCISES:

1) TAKE THE EXERCISE. WHAT HAPPENS HERE?  USE A Cmin7 ARPEGGIO. YOU HAVE TO APPROACH CHROMATICALLY EVERY NOTE IN THE ARPEGGIO FROM THE LOWEST NOTE TO THE HIGHEST NOTE THAT YOU FIND ON YOUR INSTRUMENT (THIS IS WRITTEN FOR A 24 FRETS 4 STRING BASS… BUT YOU CAN ADAPT IT TO EVERY BASS!)

REMEMBER: DO NOT USE A METRONOME… ONLY WHEN YOU HAVE THE EXERCISE “UNDER YOUR FINGERS” CAN YOU USE A METRONOME. AS USUAL PLAY THE EXERCISE AS FAST AS YOU CAN!

2) TRANPOSE THE EXERCISE IN ALL KEYS!

OK?

HAVE A GREAT PRACTICE TIME!

those exercises will not yield a whole lot unless they are practiced in a horizontal way…..
That system was taken from the late charlie banocus.. if you practice them simply up and down vertically you are simply reenforcing patterns that are already in place for a student who would take this exercise seriously.

the other thing is that’s important is to target only particular chord tones at a time. not all at once.

Hi David!Thank you very much for comment.Much respect!!!!
I studied with Charlie Banacos and him was my first inspiration. Please check, that i thank him often during these lessons.
With Charlie we studied a chord tone at a time, and was great!ISo i agree with you.Honestly i tried to find my way and i experimented in other ways and used it first for myself and then for my students and sincerely it works….so give me a chance:)))))
About vertical or horizontal way of practicing,it depends from our personal skills. An expert bass player, probably don’t use this exercises.I never talked about vertical or horizontal way of practing but first i gave this exercises to my students and many of them wasn’t able to play it neither vertical or horizontal. No one was able to play it very fast like i suggest in my lessons.
However thank you very much for your great contribution.Ciao Andrea
