The Goat Rodeo Sessions: Edgar Meyer, Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Chris Thile
This CD showcases bassist Edgar Meyer, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, mandolinist Chris Thile, and fiddler Stuart Duncan. Each player in his own right commands his musical sphere, and the combination of these stellar players along with some seriously inspired compositions makes this musical offering unique in every sense of the word.
For the record, a goat rodeo is a term used by aviation people to describe a scenario that requires about 100 things to go right at once if you intend to walk away from it. Speaking in musical terms, I see this correlation being successfully realized, as the interplay from these four accomplished musicians is the heart of what this recording is all about.
Cross-genre for me personally represents the true sprit of what my particular vision of progressive music is about these days, and this CD is a stellar example of that premise. Great musicianship, thoughtful compositions, and four accomplished players working in that paradigm with listening and reacting to the music at hand being the focal point. I can’t recommend this CD enough as far as breaking down musical boundaries and keeping the music first and foremost.
