Kai Eckhardt - Zeitgeist

CD Review, Kai Eckhardt’s Zeitgeist

zeitgeist |?ts?t?g?st; ?z?t-|

noun [in sing. ]

The defining spirit or mood of a particular period of history as shown by the ideas and beliefs of the time:  the story captured the zeitgeist of the late 1960s.

ORIGIN mid 19th cent.: from German Zeitgeist, from Zeit ‘time’ Geist ‘spirit.’

From the opening cascading harmonics of “Seven Cows Jumping Over The Moon”, I was desperately hooked by the second release of the incredible Kai Eckhardt and his new concept/band Zeitgeist. Kai teams a wonderful cast of players who share his able musicality to sculpt the finest grooves I have heard from this incredible rhythm duo! That said guitarist Chris Robinson, keyboardist Osam Ezzeldin, and drummer Dana Hawkins also play a large part in the articulation of Kai’s very active mind and musical ideas.

There simply is not a “throw-away” tune on the entire disc! Not only does Kai deftly employ the latest and coolest bass acrobatic techniques that will send players to the shed (check out “Giant Slaps”), but he also sings with passion and serves as the sole composer of the material featured on Zeitgeist. Well done! This is the sound of exacting purpose through a completely realized vision… with chops that can move time and space!  If you dig fusion blended flawlessly with cool song craft, you’ll dig Zeitgeist!

Must hear tunes: Mary Poppins, Giant Slaps, Chased, KK Express
