Record Release Party… “Are You Sure You Three Guys Know What You Are Doing?”
I had the pleasure of interviewing Penn Jillette about his new album, “Are You Sure You Three Guys Know What You Are Doing?”. Last week I had the opportunity to attend the record release party where pianist Mike Jones, drummer Jeff Hamilton and bassist Penn Jillette took the stage at Vic’s Las Vegas. What an evening! We were thrilled to get an invite to hear these incredibly talented musicians play.
If I was impressed by the album, the live performance totally blew me away. This Jazz Trio delivered a dynamic performance of their music with high energy, precision and quite a few laughs along the way.
Mike’s piano work is superb. Jeff’s drumming was extraordinary (Especially his incredible solo rendition of “Night in Tunisia”). Penn’s bass work was flawless and even though he says he is just shooting for “Okay”, he delivered a great set with quite a few solos and made all of us bass players proud.
This was a once-in-a-lifetime event, but if they ever get together again in public and you have the opportunity to hear them play, run, do not walk, on down.
For those of you who might not be able to catch these guys live, I still very heartily recommend their album (See my review ). Another possibility is that Penn and Mike play a set before the Penn & Teller Show at the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas so you catch them there. Just make sure you are there an hour before showtime to catch the preshow.
Vic’s Las Vegas was the perfect venue for this event. It provided an intimate setting with all the supporting gear a Jazz Trio could need. On top of that, the food was delicious and the service was friendly and very efficient.
