Rob van der Loo, the Viking Next Door: August 2020 Issue
Rob van der Loo Interview…
It is with great pleasure that I get to interview Rob van der Loo, the epic bass player from the band Epica, for the August 2020 cover issue of Bass Musician Magazine.
In this interview, it is very clear that Rob is a serious thinker, totally passionate about his bass playing, and is a team playing, solution-based human being that embraces life and all of its possibilities through all forms of art.
It is so refreshing to see a man that has been in the industry for decades and still maintains the fire and excitement of why he got into this business in the first place.
Rob van der Loo and I talked about life and his musical roots in Rotterdam, his home town, as well as all of the symphonic metal royalty that all spans from this one place, Epica, Night Wish, and Within Temptation to name a few.
Rob is also a very real and funny guy.
It’s so cool to be able to weave a real-time conversation where the listener can virtually feel like a fly on a wall, secretly listening into so much true experience that is capable of lighting a perfect fire under your ass and inspire you to kick your true priorities and dreams into gear for our new changing reality.
From his solo project Six Arms to his favorite Dingwall basses, his love of collecting original art & hell boy paraphernalia, to his love of cooking, watching movies, and the latest news on Epica, it’s all here in this amazing interview.
There are also a few out of control funny moments and behind the scene scoops that will put you on the floor laughing.
They will remind you that true music and art is a combination of having a blast, not taking yourself too seriously, and flipping that epic switch that transforms you into a superhero of bass and inspiration to others, because you always follow through and continue what you started so long ago.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I invite you to strap yourself in and get ready to be amped up by the words and experiences of The Viking Next Door, Rob van der Loo.

Review: CrystalBright Rombo Picks
CrystalBright Rombo Picks
PR SamplePlaying bass with a pick is still a touchy subject in our community. I believe you should be able to use whatever you need to get your sound. Even though I mostly play with my fingers, I like to check out innovative new picks that might have something new to offer, sonically speaking.
Judith and Carlos from Rombo recently contacted me about a new material called CrystalBright that they have been researching for the last 12 months and offered to send some prototype picks. After trying them out, I put together this video with my findings.

Working-Class Zeros: Episode #2 – Financial Elements of Working Musicians
“These stories from the front are with real-life, day-to-day musicians who deal with work life and gigging and how they make it work out. Each month, topics may include… the kind of gigs you get, the money, dealing with less-than-ideal rooms, as well as the gear you need to get the job done… and the list goes on from there.” – Steve the Bass Guy and Shawn Cav
