GHS Artist Showcase to honor Mental Health Awareness

Published

on

GHS Strings is set to honor National Mental Health Awareness Month with a Hard Rock benefit concert in downtown Los Angeles. It has been a rough go for the music industry of late – losing icons to preventable fates, and the company has aligned with TO WRITE LOVE ON HER ARMS to do their part in the fight against stigma and the effort to offer help to those in need.

The show, on Saturday May 19th at 5 Star Bar in DTLA, will also be sponsored by Metal Assault, Gruv Gear, Tsunami Cables, Wear Your Music and Right Angle PR. Performing will be the early Metallica Tribute band, CLIFF EM ALL, BATFARM, LOVE AND A .38, RONNY NORTH and DIANTHUS.

Tickets can be purchased for $7 in advance and $10 day of show via MetalAssault.com. There will be swag-giveaways at the event and information on Mental Health Awareness for attendees.

ABOUT THE BANDS:

Cliff Em All Paying tribute to the most celebrated era of one of the biggest Heavy Metal bands of all time, Cliff ‘Em All performs tracks from Metallica’s first three landmark albums, thought of by both young and experienced fans as the band’s ‘classic’ albums. Due to the level of 80s nostalgia in Los Angeles, drummer Dan Hegarty and bassist Menno Verbaten saw an opportunity to do something loud, fast and aggressive that EVERYONE in the LA music scene could appreciate. They recruited rhythm guitarist and vocalist John Hatfield (yes, that’s his real name) and lead guitarist Chris Buzea to complete the lineup of ambitious, young musicians who could deliver powerful renditions of Metallica’s classic catalog to live audiences. Beginning each set with “The Ecstasy Of Gold,” Cliff ‘Em All played everywhere from LA’s seediest bars and strip clubs up to some of the biggest venues in the city, including The Whisky A-Go-Go, The Viper Room and The House Of Blues. Greatest hits and deep Metallica album cuts pleased these crowds but in 2013, Cliff ‘Em All took it up a notch and began performing full-album shows. The road began to beckon and in early 2015, Cliff ‘Em All became a regional touring band on the West Coast of the US, bringing their brand of classic live Metallica to anywhere that longs to revisit the glory days of metal.

Love and a .38 is a Rock band… and they’re truly very sorry about that. But the thing is, they have no other choice. Four guys from different parts of the country, who’s varied and shared experiences, triumphs, and failures have brought them all to Los Angeles with that same conclusion. In their short existence they have been tirelessly D.I.Y. in all aspects of their career. Through social media, creativity, and lots of elbow grease they have amassed a worldwide following nearly unprecedented for an unsigned, unrepresented, independent band. Not concerned with hyphens and sub genres they have taken an “Its all rock and roll to me” approach to the writing of their debut full length album, and have stumbled upon a sound that is unmistakably their own, and undeniably Rock.

Batfarm incorporates elaborate choral harmonies with ominous soundscapes and deeply introspective lyrics that can only be describe as “darkedelic”. Batfarm is best enjoyed live however, and accentuated by singer/guitarist, Alexx Calise’s dynamic, soaring vocals and larger-than-life persona, and drummer, Dennis Morehouse’s tasteful, driving drumming. The band performs as a duo (though you’d never know it based on how big their sound truly is), and plays along with their completely self-produced tracks–no programming; just live instruments performed all by Calise and Morehouse.

Ronny North plays his own signature brand of instrumental rock guitar music. His music has been used on MTV’s reality shows and several others . He also gets press and plays all over the world. Ronny’s bassist Bryan Talbot is a long time GHS user and a proud new endorser.

Dianthus is a melodic metal act based out of Los Angeles, California. The band was formed by twin sisters, Jackie and Jessica Parry. Their music has intrigued listeners with their chaste, melodic vocal harmonies, increasingly ominous guitar tones, thunderous bass, and full-throttle attack on drums. Known for their goth-metal image, Dianthus evokes a sense of elegance and mystery to their live performance, as well as an acceleration of high-energy on stage. In March of 2016, Dianthus was selected to participate in the House of Blues’ Music Forward Foundation’s “Bringin’ Down the House” Showcase at the legendary Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, California. The band also released their debut single titled “Within Hazel Eyes” in February of 2017 (produced by Jeremy “JINXX” Ferguson of Black Veil Brides). The band is currently plotting the release of their debut full-length album (recorded at Matt Sorum’s eminent DRAC STUDIOS in Beverly Hills, produced by JINXX).

Father Son: An Evening with Nathan and Noah East and Friends

Father Son: An Evening with Nathan and Noah East and Friends

It’s not often you get to witness a performance that feels both masterfully polished and deeply personal. “Father Son: An Evening with Nathan and Noah East and Friends” delivered exactly that when it recently rolled through Las Vegas.

Nathan East is undeniably one of the most iconic, versatile, and prolific bass players of our time. With a résumé that spans decades and genres, his musicianship has become part of the soundtrack of modern music.

Following naturally in his footsteps is his son, Noah East, an accomplished pianist and organist whose growth as a musician feels both organic and genuinely earned. Growing up in a musical household may have opened doors, but Noah has clearly put in the work to cultivate his own voice, one that’s mature, confident, and increasingly commanding.

Last year, the father-son duo released their aptly titled album, Father Son, a project that beautifully captures their musical chemistry.

Nathan & Noah East, FATHER SON

In a recent conversation I had with Nathan (full interview going live in Bass Musician Magazine on April 1st), he spoke enthusiastically about taking the project on the road. When he mentioned a Las Vegas date, I immediately secured tickets.

The show took place at Myron’s at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, one of the city’s most inviting listening rooms. The venue’s art deco ambiance and pristine acoustics make it ideal for a performance of this intimacy and sophistication. With its comfortable table seating, guests can enjoy food and beverages while remaining fully immersed in the music, a perfect setting for an evening of jazz-infused artistry.

The lineup for the evening featured Nathan on upright and electric bass, Noah on piano and Hammond B-3 organ, Donald Barrett on drums, and Michael “Nomad” Ripoll on guitar. Together, they formed a tight, well-oiled unit that impressed from the first downbeat. There was an ease on stage, an unspoken communication, that only seasoned musicians can achieve.

Father Son: An Evening with Nathan and Noah East and Friends

The set list offered a thoughtful blend of jazz standards, selections from Father Son, and songs associated with some of the biggest names Nathan has collaborated with over the years, including Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, and Daft Punk. The audience was treated to a seamless 90-minute performance with no intermission, just continuous, captivating music.

As expected, Nathan’s bass work was exceptional. His note choices and phrasing elevated every arrangement, serving the music with taste and authority. Noah’s virtuosity was evident throughout the night on both piano and organ, though it was on the Hammond B-3 where he truly seemed to shine. His touch, dynamic control, and tonal choices revealed a musician well beyond his years.

“Nomad” Ripoll’s guitar work was equally compelling, with several moments to stretch out and deliver expressive, fiery solos. Meanwhile, Donald Barrett’s drumming was tight, precise, and deeply musical. He drove the band with subtle power and, during his solo feature, displayed jaw-dropping technique that drew wide smiles from his bandmates and enthusiastic applause from the audience.

In the end, “Father Son” is more than a concert; it’s a celebration of legacy, mentorship, and shared passion. It’s rare to see generational artistry unfold in real time with such authenticity. This is a must-see show, and I’ll certainly be in the audience again the next time they return to Las Vegas.

Gear News: Spector Unveils One-of-One 50th Anniversary Custom Shop Bass

Spector Musical Instruments celebrates its 50th anniversary with the unveiling of a singular Custom Shop creation: a one-of-one 50th Anniversary NS-5 bass that honors five decades of craftsmanship, innovation, and history. Created as a commemorative showpiece, this exclusive instrument reflects Spector’s journey from its Brooklyn origins through its defining milestones, and will be presented publicly in a dedicated display case at NAMM, offering attendees a rare opportunity to experience the brand’s legacy through a single, historic instrument.

Built on Spector’s iconic NS-5 platform, the 50th Anniversary Custom Shop Bass features a neck-thru-body construction paired with solid, master-grade maple wings. The instrument is finished in a striking gold stained finish, chosen to symbolize the significance of Spector’s 50-year milestone. A defining visual element of the bass is its full-fingerboard and headstock inlay, designed in collaboration with Pearl Works, which employs a postcard-and-stamp motif to chronicle Spector’s history. The inlay artwork spans the entire fingerboard and headstock, illustrating key chapters in the brand’s evolution, from its early Brooklyn years to its present-day home in the Catskills. The bass is built on a 35” scale length, further reinforcing its modern performance foundation beneath the commemorative aesthetic.

As a historical and visual centerpiece, the 50th Anniversary Custom Shop Bass was conceived primarily as a storytelling instrument. This one-of-one bass stands apart from Spector’s production offerings, existing as a museum-grade instrument designed to visually represent the brand’s 50-year journey.

Summing up the project, Spector’s Global Brand Manager John Stippell stated “It has been amazing to work with Pearl Works to deliver this narrative inlay chronicling Spector’s storied history. We’re all thrilled to show off such a stunning bass for our 50th anniversary and continue on for another 50!”
