Drummer Tim Kuhl is surely an active and integral member of a new generation of young and very talented players calling New York home and helping to further shape an already exciting jazz scene there. Consisting of drummer Tim Kuhl, guitarists Nir Felder (who played with me for my senior recital at Berklee!) & Ryan Mackstaller, bassist Aiden Carroll and horn players Jon Irabagon & Rick Parker this group takes us in some very interesting directions. The phrases “Indie-jazz” or “Garage Jazz” come to mind. Somewhat raw and unrefined (refreshingly so?), the music is also full of depth and intrigue. These are schooled and experienced players taking chances and truly seeing where the music will take them. I would imagine that, with these guys, what would be a beautiful and haunting ballad one night may turn into a distortion laden, angular sonic assault the next.
